A terrible early morning crash shook a central Toledo neighborhood on Monday. The violent wreck took the life of Richard Villolovos. It also sent two other people straight to the hospital. Two pickup trucks slammed into each other in the darkness. One of the trucks burst into flames right away. The whole incident brought a massive wave of flashing lights and emergency crews to the street.
The fatal collision happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of West Bancroft Street. The crash site sat right between Detroit Avenue and Upton Avenue. Local police rushed to the scene after neighbors reported a loud impact. They found a chaotic situation waiting for them in the middle of the road.
Two Dodge Ram pickup trucks were involved in the wreck. The force of the crash was absolutely devastating. One truck caught fire immediately and became a blazing inferno. The second pickup truck flipped completely over onto its side. People were trapped inside both vehicles as the smoke started to fill the air.
Richard Villolovos was stuck inside the burning truck. Emergency responders tried everything they could to save him. Sadly, he was pronounced dead right there at the scene. Authorities have not said if he was the driver or a passenger in the vehicle. His sudden death has left his family and friends completely heartbroken.
The situation grew even more intense as officers realized another person was trapped in that same burning truck. Toledo police officers did not hesitate to run toward the flames. They fought against the extreme heat to pull the second victim out of the cab. It was a race against the clock to save a life.
The rescue was incredibly dangerous for the first responders on the scene. The first officer to reach the burning truck suffered serious damage to his gear. The heat was so bad that his protective gloves literally melted while he carried the victim away. The rescued person was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Meanwhile, the driver of the second Dodge Ram was also in bad shape. That truck was resting on its side after rolling over in the collision. Firefighters and medics worked quickly to free the driver from the wreckage. They loaded the injured driver into an ambulance and sent them to a local hospital.
The street stayed closed for more than four hours while crews cleaned up the mess. Police diverted traffic away from the area so investigators could look for clues. The road finally opened back up around 5:45 a.m. The local community is now waiting for answers as specialists try to figure out exactly what caused the crash.
