It was supposed to be just another normal weekend road trip, but it turned into every family’s worst nightmare on a dark Iowa road. A devastating collision with a massive freight train instantly shattered the lives of a tight-knit Omaha group early Sunday morning. The horrific crash stole the life of 24-year-old Sandra Factor Pano and left four other people, including a sweet five-year-old child, fighting for their lives in the hospital.
Sandra was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew her, known all over her Omaha community for her incredibly big heart and gentle spirit. Friends say she was the kind of person who always put others first and shared love completely without expecting anything back. Now, those same loved ones are left holding onto precious memories, absolutely heartbroken over a life that ended way too soon.
The tragic event unfolded just before 1:00 a.m. on July 19 near the tiny town of Arion, Iowa. Sandra was riding along as a passenger in a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee with her family and friends, heading down the highway. They were crossing the tracks at the Grace Street railroad intersection when a massive Union Pacific train suddenly plowed directly into their SUV.
The sheer force of the impact was completely terrifying, throwing the heavy Jeep off the tracks like a toy. It came to a rest deep inside a dark ditch right between the active railroad line and Highway 30. Within minutes, the quiet night air was filled with the screaming sirens of emergency responders rushing to the chaotic scene.
Medics from multiple local rescue agencies worked furiously in the dark to pull the victims out of the crushed vehicle. The scale of the emergency required an immediate, massive response to give everyone a fighting chance. All five people inside the Jeep had suffered serious, painful injuries and needed advanced medical care right away.
The rescue operation quickly turned into a race against the clock as helicopters were called in to help. Two of the injured adults had to be airlifted through the night directly to the Nebraska Medical Center for specialized emergency surgery. Meanwhile, an ambulance rushed the injured five-year-old child across state lines to the Children’s Hospital in Omaha.
As the remaining survivors, Jennifer Factor Pano, Jose Aquino Factor, and Christian Alverado Dimayuga, begin their long and painful recovery, investigators are still trying to piece together exactly what went wrong at that crossing. For now, a grieving community is simply focusing on honoring Sandra’s beautiful legacy of kindness and love. They are praying that the surviving family members find the strength to pull through this dark time together.
