Folks in Polk County are waking up to some truly heartbreaking news this week. Randy Johnson, a 70-year-old resident of Osceola who spent decades pouring his heart into local kids and high school athletics, lost his life Monday morning following a tragic crash on Highway 92. The sudden loss has sent a deep wave of grief through the small town and surrounding communities.
To know Randy was to know a man who dedicated his entire life to helping young people find their footing. He was a long-serving educator and current track coach at York Public Schools. Out on the track, Randy specialized in working with pole vaulters, guiding student-athletes through a tough and technical sport with endless patience, quiet encouragement, and a warm smile.
The fatal accident happened early Monday morning, just after 6 a.m. Randy was riding his ATV westbound on Highway 92, about eight miles west of Osceola near the F Road intersection. It was a routine start to the day on a familiar stretch of rural road that so many locals travel every morning.
According to investigators with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a pickup truck traveling behind Randy’s ATV struck the vehicle from the rear. The driver of the truck told deputies that they simply did not see the ATV ahead on the highway. The force of the impact ejected Randy into the north ditch, while both the pickup and the ATV traveled off the roadway and came to a stop in a nearby tree line.
First responders rushed to the scene shortly after dispatchers received a 911 call at 6:09 a.m. Emergency medical crews transported Randy to a local hospital. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the 70-year-old coach succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
