The tight-knit community of St. Martinville, Louisiana, is dealing with an incredibly heavy heart this week. A terrible highway accident took the life of 26-year-old Randall P. Belaire. The young man was just riding along with friends when everything went wrong in an instant. It happened late Friday night on Interstate 55, a stretch of road that turned into a scene of absolute heartbreak.
State troopers say Randall was sitting in the back seat of a 2009 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The SUV had pulled over on the right shoulder of the road near Louisiana Highway 442. The driver had the hazard lights flashing to warn anyone passing by. Randall did not have his seat belt on at the time, completely unaware of the danger heading their way.
Suddenly, another vehicle entered the picture and changed everything. A Kia Carnival was heading south down the interstate in the dark. For reasons that investigators are still trying to wrap their heads around, the Kia drifted completely off the road. It plowed directly into the back of the parked Trailblazer at full speed.
The force of the crash was devastating. Randall suffered massive, fatal injuries from the impact. Even though emergency crews rushed out to the highway as fast as they could, there was nothing they could do to save him. The medical team pronounced the 26-year-old dead right there at the scene.
Miraculously, the other people inside the Trailblazer managed to escape the worst of it. The driver and three other passengers were all wearing their seat belts properly. They walked away with only minor injuries. Still, paramedics took all four of them to a local hospital just to be safe and get checked out.
The people in the crashing vehicle did not suffer major physical injuries either. The driver of the Kia and her front-seat passenger were buckled up tightly. They only had minor cuts and bruises and went to the hospital for evaluation. But the police quickly realized this was not just a typical, tragic accident.
Troopers on the scene noticed clear signs that the Kia’s driver, 27-year-old Brianna L. Hutson, was impaired. As soon as the hospital gave her a clean bill of health, officers arrested her. They booked her into the Tangipahoa Parish Correctional Facility on several heavy charges. She is now facing vehicular homicide, five counts of vehicular negligent injuring, careless operation, and having an open container in the car.
Now, a family is left picking up the pieces of a life ended far too soon. Randall’s friends and loved ones are facing a massive, empty void. They are holding onto every single good memory and every laugh they shared with him. The Louisiana State Police are still digging into the crash, but for the people who loved Randall, the world will never be the same.
