The Corpus Christi community is dealing with a massive wave of heartbreak today. A terrible two-vehicle wreck took the lives of five family members on a quiet Saturday morning. The whole thing happened around 8:30 a.m. on July 18, 2026. Everyone is still trying to process how quickly everything changed for this tight-knit group.
The family members who passed away were Samantha Cruz, Sara Cruz, Sonia Montes, Sallie Montes, and Ruben Cruz. They were deeply loved by their friends and neighbors. Losing three generations of a single family all at once has left an entire neighborhood in absolute shock.

The group was traveling together in a 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee when the unthinkable happened. They were passing through the intersection of the US 77 access road and State Highway 89. It was supposed to be a regular weekend drive, but it turned into a complete nightmare in a split second.
According to officials, the Jeep collided with a 2011 Toyota Tundra at the intersection. The impact was incredibly violent and crushed the passenger side of the SUV. First responders rushed to the scene immediately, but the damage was already done for most of the family inside.
Justice of the Peace Judge Leslie Pullin had the heartbreaking duty of pronouncing four of them dead right there at the scene. Samantha, Sara, Sonia, and Sallie never stood a chance against the heavy impact. The sudden loss has left their remaining relatives carrying an unimaginable burden of grief.
The fifth family member in the vehicle, 68-year-old Ruben Cruz, survived the initial crash but was in critical condition. Emergency crews called in a HALO-Flight to rush him to CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline hospital. Medical teams worked tirelessly to save him, but his injuries were just too severe, and he passed away later that day.
Meanwhile, the people in the other vehicle got incredibly lucky. A 46-year-old father from San Antonio and his two young boys, ages 15 and 11, were in the Toyota Tundra. They walked away without any serious injuries, though they went to the Northwest Emergency Room just to be safe.
Right now, loved ones are holding onto every memory and bond they shared with the five family members. The community is wrapping its arms around the surviving relatives as they face a long road of mourning. The stories and impact of these five souls will definitely live on in Corpus Christi forever.
