It was supposed to be just another quiet summer night in Temperance, Michigan. But early Thursday morning on July 23, 2026, a local family’s world completely shattered. Kevin Wayne Chesney, a 61-year-old resident known around town, was walking along the shoulder of S. Telegraph Road when a driver hit him and kept right on going. Just like that, a life was taken on a dark stretch of highway, leaving a whole community in deep grief and desperately searching for answers.
Around 1:28 a.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies got the call about a person lying on the side of the road just north of Crabb Road in Bedford Township. Emergency crews rushed out to the scene, but there was nothing they could do. Kevin was already gone. He was lying motionless along the northbound lane on the east side of Telegraph Road, where he had been taking his steps earlier that night.
An autopsy by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office over in Toledo confirmed what everyone feared. Kevin suffered severe blunt force trauma to his head. The injuries made it crystal clear that he was struck hard by a heavy vehicle moving down the highway. The impact was violent, and the person behind the wheel did not even pull over to check on him or call for help.
Investigators believe Kevin was walking northbound along the edge of the asphalt when the oncoming vehicle drifted over or passed too close. Based on the evidence left scattered along the blacktop, deputies suspect the vehicle was either a pickup truck or a commercial truck. The vehicle likely has noticeable damage on its passenger side, especially around the side mirror or any gear extending from the side.
