It was around 4:35 on a Thursday afternoon when what should have been a routine ride turned into a heartbreaking loss on State Route 290. Fifty-year-old Corey S. Wren was out on his Harley-Davidson, heading eastbound along East Trent Avenue through Spokane Valley. Traffic was moving normally, and there was no warning of the tragedy about to unfold.
That quiet afternoon changed in an instant near North Evergreen Road. A GMC Sierra pickup truck, also traveling eastbound in the same lane ahead of Corey, suddenly drifted off the right side of the pavement. The truck briefly rode onto the right shoulder before the driver cut back onto the road, entering the eastbound lane directly in front of Corey’s motorcycle.
The pickup struck the Harley-Davidson with sudden force. The impact sent both vehicles sliding clear across the eastbound lanes, through oncoming traffic lanes, and all the way onto the westbound shoulder. Corey was thrown from his motorcycle during the crash, landing hard on the side of the highway.
Bystanders and first responders rushed over to help, working quickly to render aid on the roadside. Despite their best efforts to save him, Corey S. Wren suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead right there at the scene.
The driver of the GMC Sierra, identified as a 23-year-old Spokane man, was also taken from the scene in an ambulance. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital after he suffered what authorities described as an unexpected medical emergency during the incident.
State troopers with the Washington State Patrol arrived to secure the scene and investigate the cause. Authorities confirmed that neither booze nor drugs played any role in the collision, though potential charges remain under review while officials work through the full investigation.
For the folks living in Spokane Valley, news of Corey’s passing hit hard. He was a familiar and welcome sight in the local community, known for his love of riding and the genuine relationships he built with those around him over the years.
