A young boy stood by the side of a busy state highway in Delaware County, wrapped in nothing but a towel. He was crying hysterically and screaming for his mother. Drivers passing by could see the sheer panic on his face, but few knew the absolute nightmare that had just unfolded down by the water seconds earlier.
It was supposed to be a relaxing Sunday evening along the scenic Scioto River, just north of Columbus. Two married Honduran couples and their friend had gathered near the riverbank for a simple fishing trip. They had brought along two young children under the age of ten to enjoy the fresh air and warm weather. Nobody had any idea that a quick trip to the water would turn into an unimaginable disaster.
The four Honduran victims have since been identified by officials as 33-year-old Miguel Ángel Guerra, 33-year-old Carmen Idalia Lara Ferrera, 33-year-old José Mario Pineda, and 29-year-old Marina Suyapa Regalado Miranda. Authorities have not yet released the name of the fifth adult who died in the river.
Trouble started when one of the adults decided to step into the Scioto River to go for a swim. Within moments, that person was caught in the river’s deceptively strong current and began desperately struggling to stay afloat. Seeing their friend in deep trouble, two other adults in the group didn’t hesitate for a single second. They jumped straight into the moving water to help pull them out.
Sadly, the powerful current quickly overwhelmed those two rescuers as well. Seeing all three adults in full panic mode, the remaining two adults on the bank rushed into the water in a final, desperate rescue attempt. In a matter of minutes, the water pulled everyone under. All five adults tragically drowned in a horrific chain reaction of selfless sacrifice.
Terrified drivers on the nearby road called 911 after seeing the traumatized young boy running near traffic, as well as a body drifting downstream. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and managed to pull two women out of the water Sunday night. They were rushed to local hospitals, but doctors could not save them. Search teams recovered the bodies of the three men from the river the following morning.
The two young children who watched the entire tragedy from the shore were spared from the water, but they lost both of their parents in an instant. Local child services immediately took custody of the kids while Honduran officials worked alongside American authorities. The Honduran government is currently organizing efforts to help repatriate the victims’ bodies and safely reunite the orphaned children with surviving family back home.
