It was supposed to be just another Saturday morning in Oxnard. Around 7:48 a.m. on July 18, 15-year-old Maya Andrea Diaz Morales was out near the busy crossing of Vineyard Avenue and Central Avenue, right near Rio Mesa High School. Nobody knew that in just a few seconds, a routine walk would turn into every parent’s worst nightmare.
Maya stepped out into the street to cross Vineyard Avenue. According to traffic investigators, she was crossing against the traffic signal. At that exact moment, a southbound Chevrolet Traverse SUV was coming down the road. The driver could not stop in time, striking the teenager in the middle of the roadway.
Calls flooded into dispatch right away. Emergency crews from the Oxnard Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol rushed to the scene. Paramedics found Maya lying in the street with critical injuries and worked quickly to stabilize her before loading her into an ambulance and speeding off to a local hospital.
Back home, her family received the alarming news and raced to meet her. But her father, Mario Diaz, later shared the crushing heartbreak they faced when they arrived. By the time they walked into the hospital, Maya had already passed away. They never got to hold her hand, whisper that they loved her, or say a proper goodbye.
According to CHP acting Sgt. Michael Neuner, doctors did everything they could, but Maya’s injuries were simply too severe. Officers confirmed that the driver stayed right at the scene and cooperated fully with the investigation. Authorities also noted that alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash.
Grieving and overwhelmed, Mario set up an online GoFundMe fundraiser titled “Dona a la memoria de Maya Andrea Diaz Morales.” The family is asking for help to cover the unexpected funeral expenses. Most importantly, they want to fulfill their final wish: bringing Maya’s body back home to Mexico so she can be laid to rest among her extended family.
The response from the local community was fast and heartfelt. By Wednesday, friends, neighbors, and kind strangers had raised over $19,000 for the Diaz family. While no amount of money can ease the pain of losing a child, the community’s support is giving a grieving family a helping hand during their darkest hour.
