Folks back home in Bethalto, Illinois, are dealing with a really heavy loss right now. William Harry Bailey, a 71-year-old local, went out West for a family trip but sadly never made it back. A fun summer getaway turned into an absolute nightmare over the weekend, leaving an entire community completely heartbroken.
William had traveled all the way to Oregon to catch up with his relatives for a big family reunion. Everyone was excited to spend some quality time together out on the water. They decided to rent a nice pontoon boat on Saturday afternoon to make the most of the beautiful sunny day.
Everything was going perfectly until around two in the afternoon when William and his sister walked out to the front of the boat. They just wanted to snap a quick photo together to remember the special trip. Nobody had any idea that this simple, happy moment would lead to a total disaster in a matter of seconds.
As the siblings stood together at the very front, the front of the pontoon boat suddenly dipped down hard into the water. This sudden movement forced the back of the boat to tilt way up into the air. Both William and his sister completely lost their footing and tipped right over the edge into the cold lake.
In that terrifying split second, William thought only about protecting his sister. He realized she was falling right toward the moving boat, so he gave her a hard push to throw her out of harm’s way. That selfless move saved her life, but it sent William directly into the path of the heavy vessel.
The boat passed completely over him, and though he managed to pop back up to the surface for a brief moment, he quickly vanished underneath the waves. His terrified family members started screaming and frantically searching the water while dialing 911 for emergency help.
Local rescue teams, including divers and fire crews, rushed out to the scene but could not find him initially. Eventually, dive teams located and recovered William’s body from the bottom of the lake. It is a devastating end to a family trip, but people will always remember him as a true hero who gave everything for his sister.
