Jonathan Allen Young was just doing his job on a warm Thursday afternoon. He was a 46-year-old dedicated public servant for the City of Cincinnati, out on the blacktop with his close crew. They were setting up a scheduled traffic project on the highway, the exact kind of everyday, necessary labor that keeps the city running smoothly for everyone else.
Around 12:45 p.m., everything changed in a terrible split second. The team was working hard along the westbound lanes of the Norwood Lateral, also known as State Route 562. Out of nowhere, a massive Metro transit bus coming down the road barreled straight toward their work zone. For reasons investigators are still trying to piece together, the bus plowed right into the back of a city maintenance pickup truck.
The force of the rear-end impact was completely devastating. The crash did not just stop there, though, as it instantly triggered a violent chain reaction. The pickup truck was shoved forward with incredible, crushing momentum. It slammed directly into a heavy trailer hooked up to another city maintenance vehicle parked just ahead of it.
Jonathan Young bore the absolute brunt of that horrific pileup. Emergency rescue crews rushed to the scene on the highway, finding the worker with severe, life-threatening injuries. Paramedics did everything they possibly could, quickly loading him into an ambulance and rushing to a nearby hospital. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, his injuries were simply too massive, and he passed away shortly after arriving.
The sudden loss has completely gutted the folks who worked alongside him every single day. To his coworkers in the Department of Public Services, Jonathan was never just a name on a city payroll sheet. City Manager Sheryl Long put it plainly, noting that city workers are far more than just colleagues. They are a tight-knit family, and losing one of their own feels like losing a piece of themselves.
Mayor Aftab Pureval also spoke out on the profound loss, calling the afternoon’s events an unimaginable tragedy for the community. The mayor sent out heartfelt prayers and deep condolences to Jonathan’s family, his friends, and the entire public services team. Everyone is currently reeling from the sudden shock of his empty chair.
Meanwhile, another city employee on the scene was hurt during the multi-vehicle wreck, though officials say that worker is thankfully expected to pull through. The westbound side of the Norwood Lateral stayed totally locked down for hours while police processed the debris field. The long closure left a whole city mourning a family man who went to work to serve his community and never made it back home.
