Monday morning in Marble Hill turned into a crime scene after a local man lost his life in a shocking act of violence right on N. Main Street.
Officers rushed to the 1300 block after someone called in a report about a man lying on the ground, bleeding badly. When police pulled up, they found 39-year-old Andrew Rhodes already dead on the pavement.
Neighbors and locals knew Rhodes as a resident of Marble Hill. Nobody expected his morning to end in such a terrible and brutal way.
Investigators soon learned that Rhodes had been viciously assaulted. Someone hit him repeatedly in the head with a long pole, leaving him broken and helpless on the ground.
The attack took an even darker turn just ten minutes later. The killer actually walked back to the scene, hit Rhodes again, pulled off his pants, and walked away into the morning air.
Police called in the Major Case Squad to help unravel what happened. Detectives worked quickly, piecing together evidence and tracking down the person behind the deadly assault.
By the end of the investigation, officers arrested 45-year-old Gabreal McBride from Cape Girardeau. McBride claimed he killed Rhodes over an old grudge, saying Rhodes had robbed him in the past.
Now, Rhodes’ family and friends are left picking up the pieces. Meanwhile, his alleged killer is sitting behind bars on a $1 million cash bond, facing charges of first-degree murder, robbery, and armed criminal action.
