Richard Fletcher set out into the Arizona dawn around five in the morning, looking to catch the cool air before the desert heat really started to cook. At sixty-one years old, heading up South Mountain Park was not anything unusual for him, just a regular start to what should have been a normal Saturday outdoors. He laced up his boots, drove out to the trailhead, and started walking into the quiet desert hills.
For hours, everything seemed totally fine. But as the afternoon rolled around, the day took a dark turn. Somewhere around two in the afternoon, someone close to Richard was talking to him on the phone when the line suddenly went dead. His battery had completely run out, leaving him stranded without any way to call for help.
By five in the afternoon, concern turned into flat-out panic when Richard still had not come home. His family knew something was terribly wrong and called the cops right away. Phoenix police officers headed out toward the east side of the park and spotted his car sitting empty near the Pima Canyon Trailhead.
As emergency crews started fanning out, a mountain cyclist riding down the trail came across a sight nobody ever wants to see. Richard was lying completely still on the ground, unresponsive in the brush along the dirt path. The rider immediately flagged down help, bringing fire crews rushing up the rocky grade.
When Phoenix Fire Department paramedics finally reached Richard’s side, there was nothing left they could do for him. They pronounced the sixty-one-year-old dead right there on the dirt path. Officers noted right off the bat that there were no obvious signs of physical injury or any kind of violence.
Because the sun was already going down and the desert terrain up there is steep and risky at night, crews had to make a tough call. They had to leave Richard on the mountain overnight for safety reasons. It was not until early Sunday morning that a Phoenix Air Rescue helicopter could fly up and lift his body off the trail.
Detectives looking into what happened say there is no sign of foul play at all. Instead, everything points toward a sudden medical problem or the brutal desert heat getting the best of him. Now, everyone is waiting on the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office to give the final word on what took Richard’s life.
Friends and neighbors are left grieving a man who just wanted to enjoy a peaceful Saturday morning in the mountains. It serves as a harsh reminder of how quickly the Arizona desert can turn dangerous, even for folks who know the area well.
