It was long past midnight on a rural highway when a sudden chain of events turned an ordinary drive into an absolute nightmare. Willie Sanders, a 70-year-old resident of Wichita, was driving south along K-14 when he attempted a left turn. In a split second, his 2001 Acura collided with a northbound 2017 Honda Pilot driven by Mark Klein, with passenger Kerry Klein aboard.
The impact sent vehicles spinning across the pavement. The Acura came to a rest along the southbound shoulder, while the Honda ended up down in the west ditch. It was the kind of scary wreck that instantly makes your heart drop, yet somehow, Sanders managed to step out of his vehicle with what appeared to be only minor bumps and bruises.
Standing out in the middle of the northbound lane, Sanders was likely trying to process the chaos, assess the damage, or see if everyone else was alright. Out on those dark country roads around 12:36 a.m., visibility is notoriously tough, and danger can creep up before anyone realizes what is happening.
That was precisely when a 1994 Buick Roadmaster came cruising down the same stretch of road. Driven by 42-year-old Lucas MacLaren of Chase, Kansas, the oncoming car suddenly came upon the fresh wreck scene in the pitch dark.
MacLaren slammed on his brakes the moment he noticed the crash scene, but it was simply too late. He did not see Sanders standing in the middle of the travel lane until impact was completely unavoidable. The Buick struck the 70-year-old pedestrian before coming to a stop on the northbound shoulder.
Emergency responders rushed out to the location, three miles north of Sterling, but there was nothing they could do for Sanders. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead right there at the scene, leaving his family and hometown community utterly heartbroken by the sudden loss.
The other people involved, including Mark and Kerry Klein as well as MacLaren, were taken to Rice Community Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. State troopers are still looking into the exact details surrounding the crash, but those who loved Willie Sanders are left holding onto precious memories of a life taken far too soon.
