It is the kind of phone call every parent in rural North Carolina dreads. Out near the border where Scotland and Robeson counties meet, a warm afternoon suddenly turned into a parent’s worst nightmare. Nine-year-old Thomas R. Moore was enjoying a summer day when tragedy struck without warning. Before anyone could process what was happening, a bright young life was cut far too short.
The trouble started on a quiet stretch along McGirt Gin Road in Maxton. First responders rushed to the scene after receiving an urgent report of a drowning. By the time emergency crews pulled up, bystanders and medical personnel were already working frantically on the little boy. They performed CPR and used every trick in the book to bring him back.
Medics loaded Thomas into an ambulance and rushed him straight to Scotland Memorial Hospital in nearby Laurinburg. Doctors and nurses in the emergency room fought hard to save him. Thomas was only nine years old, having just celebrated his birthday back in March. He was a proud student at South Johnson Elementary School, where his energetic smile could light up any hallway. Outside of class, Thomas poured his whole heart into Cub Scout Pack 444 in Laurinburg. He had recently earned his promotion to the Webelos rank, a milestone he wore like a badge of honor. He lived for the outdoors, loving nothing more than camping trips, playing outside, and working on his Pinewood Derby car. He was the kind of boy who made friends wherever he went.
Since the tragic news broke, the entire community has rallied around his grieving family. Local school leaders released heartfelt messages, asking everyone to lift up Thomas’s family, friends, and teachers in prayer. Neighboring families have been dropping off food, sharing memories, and holding tight to their own little ones a bit longer tonight.
