It was supposed to be just another normal summer Saturday afternoon in the neighborhood. But right around 4:55 p.m., the warm air broke apart with the sudden, violent crack of gunfire outside a deli at 104 Elliot Place. When the chaos cleared, twelve-year-old Jacob Freytes was lying on the pavement with a gunshot wound to his shoulder.
People on the block rushed to help as emergency crews scrambled to the scene. First responders lifted young Jacob into an ambulance and rushed him straight to Lincoln Hospital, driving fast through the city streets. A 25-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, and a 34-year-old man took a bullet to his foot. Both men were rushed by paramedics to BronxCare Health System for treatment. Doctors reported that both adult victims were in stable condition and are expected to survive their injuries.
News of Jacob’s death spread quickly through the Mount Eden community, sending a heavy wave of sadness across the borough. Neighbors gathered near the scene on Saturday night, standing behind police tape in disbelief. Many could not wrap their heads around how a child going about his day could be struck down in broad daylight right in front of a neighborhood store.
