It was supposed to be just another normal Wednesday afternoon in Lehigh County. Kandi Jo Heller, a 44-year-old woman from Slatington, was going about her day like anyone else. Nobody could have predicted that in a split second, a peaceful drive would turn into an unbelievable nightmare.
The quiet mood turned upside down at the corner of North 6th Street and Cedar Street in Allentown. What happened next was a violent collision that nobody on that street will ever forget. It was sudden, fast, and completely unfair.
Kandi was driving her Mercedes-Benz through the intersection when a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban came flying down the road at a high speed. The driver ignored a stop sign and smashed directly into Kandi’s car. The sheer force of the blow pushed the Mercedes off the road and shoved it straight into a nearby home.
First responders rushed to the scene as quickly as they could. Medical crews pulled Kandi and her passenger from the wreckage and rushed them straight to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Muhlenberg. Doctors fought hard to save her, but the blunt force injuries were just too severe. Kandi passed away later that night at 9:58 p.m.
The tragic news hit her hometown of Slatington like a heavy brick. Family, friends, and neighbors are now left holding onto fond memories of a woman who meant the world to them. Her loved ones are facing that deep, hollow pain that comes when someone you cherish is taken way too soon.
Adding to the community’s grief is pure frustration over how it all happened. Investigators arrested 24-year-old Kevin Abdiel Santiago of Allentown after he ran from the crash on foot. Authorities say he was already on their radar for a string of serious break-ins, including a gun store robbery where 15 firearms were stolen.
Right now, police and state troopers are still putting together the final pieces of the case. But for those who knew Kandi Jo Heller, the legal details take a back seat to honoring her memory. Her warmth, her life, and the love she gave will always stay alive in the hearts of those she touched.
