He was a 58-year-old local man who lost his life in a truly tragic way. Tuesday night took a dark turn when a pedestrian crash cut his journey short. It happened right along North Valley Pike, leaving a deep hole in the hearts of his family and friends.
The details of the night are honestly hard to hear. Virginia State Police say the whole thing went down right around 11:05 p.m. It was a quiet late-night stretch in the 3600 block of North Valley Pike. Most folks were already home in bed. But Jerry was out walking, and things took a turn for the worst.
Investigators say a heavy tractor-trailer was heading northbound up the road. The truck driver was just trying to go about their normal route. The big rig started to slide over into the right turn lane. The driver was prepping to pull into a nearby business.
Tragically, Jerry was walking right there in that exact same turn lane. The truck moved over, and the unthinkable happened. The massive vehicle struck Jerry before anyone even realized what was going on. It was a devastating split-second that changed everything.
First responders rushed to the scene as fast as they could. The flashing lights lit up the dark road. Emergency crews put in a massive effort to try and save him. They really did everything in their power to keep him breathing.
