Summer days along the Willamette River are usually all about relaxing and soaking up the Pacific Northwest sun. Friends gather, families bring picnic coolers, and folks head out on the water to cool off. But for the family and close friends of Justin Daniel Brudvig, a warm Saturday outdoors turned into every family’s worst nightmare in a matter of minutes.
Justin was just 26 years old, a young guy from Oregon City with his whole life ahead of him. Those who knew him best describe him as someone who brought plenty of laughter and good energy into every room he entered. He loved being outside and making the most of Oregon’s beautiful summer weekends with the people he cared about most.
On July 18, Justin decided to go paddleboarding near the Black Canyon Campground just west of Oakridge. That stretch of the river looks calm on top, making it a super popular spot for locals looking to float around and enjoy the day. Justin hit the water without wearing a life jacket, expecting nothing more than a fun and easy afternoon on the river.
Things took a sudden and terrifying turn around mid-afternoon. Out on the water, Justin ran into trouble and ended up submerged in the river. Before anyone realized what was happening, he was pulled from the water unresponsive and not breathing, sending immediate panic across the bank.
Bystanders and family members at the scene did not hesitate for a single second. They pulled Justin onto dry ground and immediately began performing CPR, pumping his chest and trying frantically to bring him back to life. Every person on that riverbank gave everything they had while waiting for professional help to arrive.
Deputies from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and rescue crews from Oakridge Fire rushed to the campground right after the emergency call came in at 3:20 p.m. First responders took over medical efforts as soon as they stepped onto the scene. They worked tirelessly to revive Justin, but despite every desperate effort, the young man could not be saved.
The news of Justin’s passing hit Oregon City like a heavy weight. His family, friends, and neighbors are left trying to process a loss that came way too fast and way too young. His death serves as a painful reminder of how fast a peaceful afternoon can turn into a tragic loss for an entire community.
As everyone who loved Justin comes together to mourn, they are clinging tightly to the good times they shared with him. His jokes, his warm smile, and his kind spirit are what people will hold onto in the hard days ahead. Justin Daniel Brudvig left this world far too soon, but he will never be forgotten by those who loved him.
