A Saturday afternoon at the park turned into every parent’s worst nightmare. Nicole Grayson, a 43-year-old local mom, didn’t hesitate for a single second when she saw her little boy tumble into the St. Johns River. It was a split-second choice that saved her son’s life but tragically cost her own.
The whole thing went down around 4 p.m. at Ed Stone Park. It was supposed to be just a normal, relaxing weekend outing. The sun was out, and families were enjoying the nice weather. But things took a sharp turn when Nicole’s four-year-old boy accidentally dropped his favorite toy over a wooden fence right near the water’s edge.
Kids will be kids, and the little guy tried to reach down to grab his toy back. In a flash, he lost his footing and splashed right into the deep, moving river current. Seeing her baby in absolute danger, Nicole did what any loving mother would do. She dove right into the water after him, completely ignoring the risk to herself.
People watching from the banks saw a truly desperate struggle unfold in the water. Nicole was fighting with everything she had to keep her boy’s head above the surface. She was running out of breath fast, but she refused to let him go under. That is when folks on the shore started yelling for help, trying to flag down anyone nearby.
Luckily, a boater cruising down the river heard the commotion and rushed over to the scene. The boater quickly threw out two life preservers toward the mother and son. Thanks to some quick thinking and steady hands, the four-year-old boy was safely pulled out of the river and onto the boat without a single scratch on him.
But the rescue was far from over. Another brave bystander dove straight into the river to help get Nicole out. They managed to pull her onto the boat, completely unconscious, and immediately started performing CPR. Paramedics rushed her to a nearby hospital where medical teams worked tirelessly in the intensive care unit to bring her back.
Sadly, despite all the emergency care and prayers from the community, Nicole passed away later that evening in the ICU. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood spoke out to thank the heroic bystanders who risked their lives to help. Today, the entire town is mourning a mother who made the ultimate sacrifice out of pure, unconditional love for her child.
