A routine Friday road trip ended in a horrific tragedy for a Houston family on a quiet stretch of Texas highway. Noelio Garza Peña, a 67-year-old resident of Houston, was riding along as a passenger when everything went wrong in an instant. He never made it to his destination.
The wreck happened right around 1:40 p.m. out in Starr County. It took place on Farm-to-Market Road 755, just south of the FM 1017 intersection near the small community of La Gloria. The afternoon traffic was moving normally until the two pickups crossed paths.

Peña was traveling inside a gray Dodge 1500 pickup truck. The truck was heading south down the two-lane state highway. For reasons that remain completely unclear, the vehicle suddenly veered away from its lane.
State troopers reported that the pickup drifted straight across the center line. It headed directly into oncoming northbound traffic. A silver Dodge Ram pulling a heavy trailer was coming from the opposite direction and faced a split-second nightmare.
The driver of the northbound Dodge Ram saw the truck coming right at his windshield. He reacted instantly and swerved hard toward the edge of the road to avoid a catastrophic head-on impact. That quick thinking saved his own life.
Unfortunately, the evasive move could not fully clear the oncoming vehicle. The southbound pickup truck carrying Peña smashed directly into the trailer towed by the Dodge Ram. The force of the impact killed Peña right there at the scene.
First responders rushed to the highway but could do nothing to save the Houston passenger. The driver of Peña’s truck survived the impact and went to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Texas Department of Public Safety is still digging into why the truck drifted across the line.
