Summer days along the Willamette River are usually all about relaxing, catching up with friends, and soaking in the sunshine. But for the family and friends of 51-year-old Romail Dontail Allen, what started as a typical July afternoon turned into an absolute nightmare. Romail was a well-loved resident from Albany, Oregon, whose bright spirit touched everyone around him, making his sudden loss hurt that much deeper.
It was right around mid-day on Sunday, July 19, when things took a terrible turn near Crystal Lake in Corvallis. Romail was out on the river enjoying the water, just like so many locals do when the summer heat kicks in. Nobody expected that a routine trip to the water would end in such a sudden heartbreak.
Around 11:50 a.m., emergency calls started coming in reporting a man struggling in the water near river mile 133. Bystanders on the riverbank watched in utter shock as the situation unfolded right before their eyes. A brave witness tried to jump into action to save Romail, doing everything humanly possible to reach him in time.
Sadly, the river’s hidden strength proved too much, and the witness could tell things had already gone downhill fast. By 11:59 a.m., that same good Samaritan had to make the tragic report to authorities that Romail appeared unresponsive in the water. To make matters worse, folks nearby noticed he was not wearing a life jacket when he went in.
First responders rushed toward the scene from every direction as fast as they could. Firefighters from the Corvallis Fire Department managed to launch a raft and get out on the water first. They finally reached Romail at about 12:22 p.m., just upriver from Michael’s Landing, pulling him onboard to start CPR right away.
Crews worked tirelessly on Romail, refusing to give up as they loaded him into the ambulance and raced off to the hospital. Emergency workers performed CPR every single second of the trip, praying for a miracle. Tragically, despite all their sweat and desperate efforts, doctors had to pronounce him dead shortly after arrival.
The news hit the tight-knit communities of Albany and Corvallis like a ton of bricks. Romail’s unexpected passing has left a massive hole in the hearts of his family, close buddies, and neighbors. Those who knew him best are holding tight to every shared smile, every joke, and every warm memory they created together over the years.
As his loved ones navigate these incredibly tough days ahead, the local community is wrapping its arms around them in support.
