It’s the kind of sudden phone call every family dreads, the one that completely changes everything in a split second. Clarissa Nunez, a vibrant 43-year-old, and 68-year-old Diamantina Martinez were just driving through Burleson County when the unthinkable happened. Their lives were cut short on a Sunday afternoon, leaving their loved ones dealing with an unimaginable, crushing void.
Folks in Corpus Christi knew these two women for their boundless warmth and unwavering devotion to their families. The devastating sequence unfolded right around 2:15 p.m. at a rural crossroads that suddenly became a scene of absolute chaos. Clarissa was behind the wheel of a 2014 Kia Optima, making a routine trip with her family riding along. As she attempted to turn left from FM 60, a massive 2020 Ford F-250 pickup truck traveling northbound on State Highway 36 slammed directly into their mid-sized sedan.
The sheer force of the collision was completely overwhelming for the smaller passenger car. State troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety rushed to the scene, but there was nothing they could do to save the two women. Both Clarissa and Diamantina suffered catastrophic injuries from the violent impact. They were tragically pronounced dead right there at the intersection, far from the home they loved.
But the nightmare did not end with the loss of the two women. In the backseat of that crushed Kia were two young children, an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, who bore the full terror of the wreck. First responders scrambled to get the severely injured little ones stabilized before rushing them off to McLane Children’s Hospital over in Temple, Texas. Over in the other vehicle, the driver of the heavy Ford pickup and two passengers managed to escape the worst of the disaster. They walked away with what state troopers described as minor injuries. Even so, emergency crews transported all three of them to St. Joseph Health in Bryan to get checked out by doctors. Their physical wounds might heal quickly, but the memory of that Sunday afternoon will likely linger for a very long time.
While the Texas Department of Public Safety investigators keep working the scene to figure out exactly what went wrong, the family is focusing on the beautiful legacies left behind. The warmth, compassion, and deep love Clarissa and Diamantina poured into the world are what matter most now. Those memories are the only things giving their family the strength to stand up against such a sudden, heartbreaking tragedy.
