Late Monday night on a dark stretch of Idlewild Road, 47-year-old Crumpler resident Eric Steven Rominger lost his life in a devastating single-vehicle wreck that has shaken the small mountain community of Ashe County.
It was right around 10:30 p.m. when emergency crews got the call to rush out toward Worth McNeil Road near Fleetwood. Up in the high country of northwestern North Carolina, those rural roads can get mighty dark, and things can turn sideways in the blink of an eye.
According to state troopers who arrived on the scene, Rominger was heading north in his white 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup truck when his wheels suddenly slipped off the right shoulder of the asphalt. In that split second, like so many drivers on narrow back roads, he tried to pull the truck back into the lane.
That instinctive jerk of the steering wheel sent the Dodge Dakota crossing all the way over the yellow lines and straight off the left side of the road. The pickup slammed hard into a dirt embankment along the treeline and flipped over, violently throwing Rominger out of the vehicle as it rolled.
First responders arrived within minutes, but the severe force of the rollover left Rominger with fatal injuries. Paramedics pronounced the 47-year-old dead right there at the scene, ending a quiet summer evening in heartbreak for his loved ones back home in Crumpler.
Investigators with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol spent roughly an hour working the crash site, keeping Idlewild Road closed off while they mapped out tire marks and reconstructed the truck’s fatal trajectory. They confirmed that speed played a direct part in why the vehicle lost traction on that rural stretch.
Troopers made a point to clarify that alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the tragic accident, and with no other drivers involved, officials officially wrapped up the case with no charges filed. For the folks living near West Jefferson and across Ashe County, it remains a painful reminder of just how unforgiving those mountain turns can be.
