A quiet Sunday night in Bay Shore turned into a heartbreaking loss when 29-year-old Ileana Cabrera was struck and killed while walking down Third Avenue. What started as an ordinary weekend evening ended in a tragedy that has left friends and neighbors in shock.

It was just past 1:10 in the morning when Ileana was walking in the eastbound lane of Third Avenue near Second Street. The area is a familiar mix of suburban homes and small local businesses where residents walk every single day, usually without a second thought.

Without warning, a 2009 Nissan traveling down the roadway hit Ileana right in the middle of the street. The force of the crash immediately knocked her down, leaving her critically injured on the pavement as emergency calls started coming in.

First responders rushed to the scene within minutes. Paramedics worked quickly to stabilize Ileana on the road before carefully moving her into an ambulance to give her the best possible chance of survival.

She was rushed straight to South Shore University Hospital right there in Bay Shore. Trauma teams and doctors did everything they humanly could to save her, but her injuries were simply too severe. Authorities later confirmed that she passed away at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 26-year-old Edwin Ortez, who also lives in Bay Shore. Ortez was not hurt in the collision and remained at the scene, cooperating with police as investigators cordoned off the street with yellow tape.

Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Department’s Third Squad are now leading the investigation to figure out exactly what happened that night. Officers impounded the Nissan for safety checks, and police are asking anyone who saw what happened around 1:10 a.m. to call detectives at 631-854-8352.
