The South Side of Chicago is holding its breath and shedding heavy tears right now. Dejanae Minee, a bright 24-year-old woman with her whole life ahead of her, was taken away in the cruelest way possible. It happened in the dead of night in the Roseland community, where a peaceful drive turned into an absolute nightmare that nobody saw coming.
It was just before one in the morning, around 12:49 a.m. to be exact. Dejanae was riding northbound in a car with another young woman, heading down Michigan Avenue near 104th Street. Everything seemed normal until an unknown gunman walked right up on them out of nowhere. Without warning, shots rang out, cutting through the quiet night air and shattering two young lives in a matter of seconds.
When Chicago Police officers rushed to the scene after getting frantic calls about gunshots and a car crash, they found a heartbreaking sight. Inside the vehicle sat Dejanae, severely wounded from multiple gunshots, including brutal hits to her thigh and the back of her head. Paramedics didn’t waste a second, rushing her straight to the University of Chicago Hospital while doing everything in their power to save her.
Despite the tireless fight by the medical team, the injuries were just too severe. Dejanae was pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving a heavy cloud of grief hanging over everyone who loved her. Her young life was cut short far too soon, leaving her family and friends grasping for answers in the wake of such senseless violence.
Another 20-year-old woman riding in the car was also caught in the hail of bullets. She suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed over to Roseland Hospital. Thankfully, doctors were able to stabilize her, and she was reported to be in good condition, though the physical and emotional scars of that night will surely take a long time to heal.
Meanwhile, detectives from Area 2 are working around the clock to piece together what happened and figure out who opened fire before vanishing into the night. But for those who knew Dejanae, the investigation is secondary to the painful void left in their hearts. People are remembering her not for how she died, but for the light, love, and sweet memories she brought into every room she walked into.
As Roseland mourns, the community is coming together to wrap its arms around Dejanae’s family during this unimaginable trial.
