The quiet early morning hours on Interstate 44 took a tragic turn this past Sunday when 63-year-old Paul Schultz lost his life in a sudden crash. Paul, who lived out in San Diego, California, was riding along as a passenger on a trip through northeastern Oklahoma. Nobody expected a routine highway drive near Tulsa to end in a devastating wreck before the sun even came up.
It was around 4:24 in the morning when everything went wrong. Interstate 44 is usually a steady stretch of highway that folks use to get across Creek County and into the bigger city areas. At that time of night, the lanes are mostly open and quiet. Paul was sitting in the passenger seat while the car was cruising eastbound along the interstate.
Without warning, the vehicle drifted right off the main lanes of the interstate. It swerved off the road and smashed straight into another car sitting parked on the right shoulder. The impact hit so hard that it knocked the parked vehicle completely over, sending it rolling back onto the highway where it came to rest blocking the travel lanes.
Emergency crews rushed out to the scene as soon as calls came in. Paramedics worked quickly to check on everyone involved, but there was nothing they could do for Paul. Medical personnel pronounced the 63-year-old California man dead right there on the side of the highway.
The person behind the wheel of the car Paul was riding in didn’t walk away unharmed either. Emergency workers loaded the driver into an ambulance and rushed them to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities haven’t shared any updates on how bad those injuries are or how the driver is doing.
By some total miracle, the person sitting inside the parked car on the shoulder wasn’t hurt at all. Even though their car got flipped over and thrown back into the lanes during the collision, that driver managed to walk away without a single physical injury.
Now, Paul’s family back home in San Diego is left grieving a sudden and heartbreaking loss thousands of miles away. State troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are still working to figure out what went wrong out on that dark stretch of road. For Paul Schultz, a simple passenger ride turned into an unexpected tragedy that ended his life far from home.
