The town of Hammond, Louisiana, is wrapping its arms around a grieving family after losing a bright young soul way too soon. Caden N. Thomas was only 19 years old with his whole life ahead of him when everything was cut short. On the early morning of July 24, 2026, Caden was doing what many young guys love to do, driving his classic 1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
The devastating incident happened along Louisiana Highway 1045 in St. Helena Parish. Caden was simply driving down the road when an oncoming westbound GMC Sierra suddenly crossed over the centerline. In a split second, the heavy truck plowed straight into Caden’s car in a violent, head-on impact.
The collision caused severe damage to both vehicles. Emergency crews rushed out to the highway as fast as they could, doing everything in their power to help the young driver. Tragically, despite all their frantic efforts, Caden was pronounced dead right there at the scene.
What made the situation even harder for those left behind was how the driver of the truck reacted immediately after the crash. Police say 23-year-old Emmitt C. Milton allegedly took off on foot, fleeing into the night before emergency workers could even get to the highway.
Milton didn’t stay missing forever, though. He eventually turned himself in to law enforcement officers later on. Now, he’s facing heavy legal consequences, including felony hit-and-run and negligent homicide, along with several other traffic-related charges as state troopers continue digging into the case.
