The morning started like any other on Main Street, but it ended in absolute heartbreak. Rodney Gatlin, a 60-year-old local whose life was full of warm connections and simple daily routines, was killed early Thursday morning. For his family and friends, the suddenness of his death is a heavy weight to carry. They are now left with nothing but memories of a man who was deeply loved.

It all went down around 1:19 a.m. in the 800 block of Main Street. Neighbors woke up to the sound of sirens as police cruisers rushed to the scene after a report of a stabbing. Officers found Gatlin bleeding out from severe injuries inside the home. Despite everyone’s best efforts to save him, his injuries were just too severe, and he was pronounced dead right there.

What makes this tragedy even harder to stomach is that police say it was an inside job. It wasn’t a random break-in or a street fight. Investigators quickly realized the fatal violence stemmed from a domestic dispute between roommates. The woman he shared his home with, 48-year-old Trameika Carr, was arrested right after the incident.

Now, Carr is sitting inside a cell at the Forrest County Jail. Police have officially charged her with second-degree murder. As she waits for her day in court, the community is left wondering how a simple roommate disagreement could escalate to the point of no return.

Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem was the one who officially identified the victim as Rodney Gatlin. His body has been sent to the state crime lab for a full autopsy. While the medical examiners do their job to figure out the exact physical cause of death, Gatlin’s family is doing the much harder work of processing their grief.

Local authorities have tried to ease some of the tension in the neighborhood by letting people know there is no ongoing danger. The Hattiesburg Police Department confirmed that this was an isolated domestic incident. Still, knowing the neighborhood is safe does little to comfort those who walk past the home and realize Rodney is gone.

For now, the people who loved Rodney are holding onto the good times they shared with him. A sudden loss like this leaves a void that never really fills up, but his memory will keep going through the stories they tell. They are asking for privacy as they try to find a way to heal from a loss that simply makes no sense.
